The creation of Sam Maitland aka Papa sam from freetown, Sierra Leone, Alafia boasts an impressive ensemble of musicians from Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Guadeloupe and the Ivory Coast.

The music is a direct mix of traditional skills and sounds, fussed with contemporary styles, together producing a unique style which incorporates a touch of jazz and reggae with the dominating African Guitar and live Percussion on Djembe and Congas.

Alafia is a seven piece band featuring Sam on lead Vocals and Rhythm guitar backed by Keyboard, Bass, Guitars, Drums, Percussion and Backing Vocals. A brass section has made some guest appearances to complete the line up.

Formed in 1993 Alafia have played live throughout the UK including the Kite Festival in Newcastle, "sounds of Africa" concert on Clapham Common London, and the Bristol Carnival where they were filmed for MTV African music show.

Sam Maitland has performed and worked with many traditional and contemporary groups including Seal, Africa Eye, King Masco, and Dunni (featured on BBC2's Rhythms of the World) In addition to his skills as a vocalist and guitarist Sam is also an accomplished percussionist, keyboard player, songwriter and music teacher.

Alafia have recently finished recording their debut CD World Citizen, which was released on 1st September 1998. World Citizen was reviewed in the December issue of Mojo Magazine who described it as "a listener-friendly album infused even at a distance with the rhythms of Freetown and Accra and suggests that they must be dynamite live".

Alafia completed a very successful five date tour in Northern and Southern Ireland at the end of February 1997 and have been awarded an Arts Council Touring.
